Sustainable Farming Practices in Northern Nigeria: A Case Study of Wukari Region

Rabo, J.S., Kundiri, M., Kabeh, J.D.

This study explores sustainable farming methods adapted to the climate conditions of Northern Nigeria, with a specific focus on the Wukari region. The research examines traditional and modern practices, evaluating their environmental impact, economic viability, and productivity. Results indicate that integrated pest management, crop rotation, and water conservation techniques significantly improved crop yields while reducing environmental degradation.

Effect of Different Feed Supplements on Growth Performance of Indigenous Chickens in Nigeria

Obun, C.O., Dauda, A., Ibrahim, T.K.

The study investigated the effects of different locally available feed supplements on the growth performance, feed conversion ratio, and overall health of indigenous chicken breeds in Nigeria. The experiment was conducted over a period of 12 weeks using 240 day-old chicks randomly assigned to four dietary treatments. Results showed significant differences in weight gain and feed conversion ratio among the treatment groups, with implications for smallholder poultry production systems.

Nutritional and Sensory Evaluation of Locally Processed Cereal-Based Food Products in Taraba State

Oni, P.I., Aworh, O.C., Akingbala, J.O.

This research evaluates the nutritional properties and consumer acceptance of locally processed cereal-based food products commonly consumed in Taraba State, Nigeria. Six cereal-based products were analyzed for proximate composition, mineral content, and anti-nutritional factors. Sensory evaluation was conducted using a 9-point hedonic scale with 50 untrained panelists. The study reveals significant variations in nutrient composition among products and identifies potential areas for nutritional improvement and product development.

Assessment of Soil Fertility Status and Nutrient Management Practices in Cassava Farms in Wukari Local Government Area

Johnson, M.A., Adamu, S.T., Ibrahim, L.K.

This study assessed the soil fertility status of cassava farms in Wukari Local Government Area and evaluated current nutrient management practices employed by farmers. Soil samples were collected from 45 cassava farms across 15 communities and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. Results indicate widespread deficiencies in nitrogen and phosphorus, with implications for sustainable cassava production in the region. The study recommends specific soil amendment strategies tailored to local conditions.

Economic Analysis of Rice Production Under Different Farming Systems in Taraba State, Nigeria

Yahaya, H.K., Umar, I.S., Tanko, L.

This research examines the economic viability of different rice production systems in Taraba State, Nigeria. Data was collected from 180 rice farmers across three agricultural zones using structured questionnaires. Gross margin analysis, benefit-cost ratio, and stochastic frontier production function were employed to assess economic performance. Results show that the irrigated rice production system yielded the highest returns on investment, while labor and fertilizer costs were major determinants of profitability across all systems.
